Christina Diakou’s project, ‘Bappou’, considers issues of memory and migration through exploring her family and Greek Cypriot background. The work creates an insight to the immigration story of her Grandfather, Vassilis Diakou, who migrated to the UK from Cyprus in 1967.

The installation mirrors the process of the fragmentation of life and culture as a result of migration and people’s movements from their homeland to other parts of the world.

‘Bappou’ captures how although migrants adapt to a new culture in a foreign country, the traditions and culture of their origin is strong and never leaves them.

Christina Diakou is a third-year photography student in Manchester Metropolitan University, from Liverpool. Her practice tends to be focused on personal experiences, her Greek Cypriot background and family.
